Position:

Laboratory Management and Equipment Specialist - (international, 4 person-months)

Description :

The impact of the Project will be increased agricultural growth, through development of more efficient livestock and horticulture agribusinesses. This outcome will be achieved with the following outputs: improved agricultural marketing infrastructure with investment in slaughterhouses, small-scale horticulture market facilities, laboratories to certify products, and improved standards for horticultural products and product-management systems.

The Project will be implemented over the period to December 2013, which is the Project completion date

Qualifications/Experience:

• Review existing laboratories, and based on governmental plans, assess options in the establishment and provision of laboratory services in priority areas;
• Prepare and evaluate feasible options/ alternatives of establishing cost recovery laboratory services;
• Based on the recommendations prepare detailed outline on laboratory infrastructure, building and equipment and laboratory management systems required for the efficient operation of such a system;
• Assist in the review of existing laboratory systems, and the proposed equipment needs for the Fruit Institutes and to assist the laboratories to become fully operational and to gain accreditation.
• Assist in developing and implementation of improved management systems and processes
• Assist in preparing the framework and action plan for the laboratory accreditation and identify requirements and accreditation companies to undertake this role in Afghanistan.
• Provide technical support to other stakeholders to assist agribusiness enterprises and associations in awareness of the importance and need for laboratory tests on food products.

• Bachelor's Degree in Food Technology and/or Food Science
• Five years experience in managing a food technology laboratory that tests food quality for all types of contamination
• Thorough knowledge and significant experience in setting up laboratory buildings and tendering and installing the equipment
•   Previous work experience in Afghanistan preferred
